Mauricio Pochettino declared himself satisfied with the performance as we booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup thanks to a convincing 2-0 win against Brighton on Wednesday night.
After dominating the first half, Erik Lamela came off the bench at half-time to score the key first goal in the 54th minute with Harry Kane’s eighth goal in cup football so far this term securing the victory 20 minutes later.
A final shot count of 19-5 in our favour summed up the display as the Championship side sat deep in a 4-5-1 system and looked to counter.
Roberto Soldado also struck the crossbar and was denied twice by goalkeeper Christian Walton.
“It was a good performance and I’m happy for the team because it’s important for us to make it into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup,” said Mauricio.
“We created a lot of chances and deserved more in terms of the result but we’re happy with the performance. It was a good victory.”
The draw for the last eight was made immediately after tonight’s fourth round ties and paired us against Newcastle at the Lane.
“The draw is always difficult, it’s a quarter-final and a good motivation for us to play at home against Newcastle,” added Mauricio.
A date has yet to be confirmed for tie although the quarter-finals will be played on the week commencing December 15.
