Spurs 1-4 Sunderland U18s - John's reaction

04 November 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

John McDermott branded Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Sunderland as a “wake-up call” for our Under-18s.

The lads were lucky to escape from Aston Villa in midweek with a point after a late Christian Maghoma strike secured a 2-2 draw.

And in the wake of Saturday’s heavy defeat at the Training Centre, Academy Manager John believes the lads’ midweek shortcomings caught up with them.

“We probably got on Saturday what we deserved on Wednesday,” John said after the game, in which Shayon Harrison had given us a first half lead before the Black Cats came back with a vengeance.

“It was a disappointing result and I was disappointed with the last 70 minutes, but it was a good wake-up call for what we need to do as individuals going forward.

“You’ve got to give Sunderland credit. They played the conditions better and once they got going they were deserved winners.

“Our concentration at times was not up to the standard that’s required.”
