Ugo Ehiogu admitted players and staff were left gutted as our Under-21s suffered a 3-1 loss against Liverpool at the Lane on Friday night.
Defensive errors cost us dearly and handed the Reds the initiative with Ryan Kent’s opener on just four minutes.
Samid Yesil also capitalised on hesitancy in our penalty area to score either side of half-time to leave the team with a mountain to climb 3-0 down in what was a huge game at the top of the Barclays U21 Premier League.
To their credit, the lads refused to throw in the towel, Will Miller pulled a goal back and we piled on the pressure without finding a second.
“It was really disappointing,” said coach Ugo. “We gifted the goals away with poor decision making at the back. We want to play out but sometimes we have to look at the position we’re in, make a judgement and deal with it and we didn’t do that well.
“The players are all gutted and the staff as well because to get beaten on our own turf, convincingly as well - I thought Liverpool were better than us on the night - was really disappointing.
“We used some choice phrases after the game and the biggest thing is the players now have to learn from it. If they do, we can take it on the chin. They have to be man enough to take that criticism, to reflect and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Our Under-21s return to action against Sunderland at Stevenage on Monday, April 27 (7pm).
