Spurs 1-2 West Ham - Tim's verdict

18 December 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Tim Sherwood couldn't hide his disappointment after our Capital One Cup exit against West Ham on Wednesday night.

Taking over first team duties for the first time alongside Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey, Tim set the team out in a 4-4-2 system with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe up front.

Vlad Chiriches returned to partner Etienne Capoue at the back but we were without suspended due Michael Dawson and Paulinho, plus injured Sandro, Younes Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Naughton. Kyle Walker captained the team in Michael’s absence.

Tim said beforehand that he was looking for the team to get on the front foot and they did just that in the first half.

Jermain Defoe and Andros Townsend went closest as we ended the half with 12 shots to West Ham’s two and over 70 per cent possession.

Things looked even better when Ade fired home a spectacular volley from Jermain’s cross to open the scoring on 67 minutes.

But the Hammers continued to hit balls into the box and eventually broke through when substitute Modibo Maiga flicked on Adrian’s 50-yard free-kick, Jack Collison found Matt Jarvis, who hammered into the top corner for 1-1 on 77 minutes.

With five minutes remaining, Mohamed Diame crossed from the right and Maiga planted home the winner, in off the post.

“We started the game well and should have scored early but the ball didn't run for us,” reflected Tim.

“We were forced to make the changes which meant we lost a bit of rhythm.

“Ade had to come off, Danny Rose had to come off otherwise you risk losing them for a long period during the season.

“We turned over possession a lot in the second half when we just should have kept the ball.

“West Ham came at us, played direct and broke us down in the end. I'm absolutely gutted.”
