Spurs 1-1 West Ham - Mauricio's reaction

05 January 2018|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino took a pragmatic view of a frustrating Thursday night against West Ham at Wembley.

The 1-1 final scoreline only tells half the story of a match we dominated from start to finish.

Indeed, it was about 20-0 in terms of efforts at goal when Pedro Obiang unleashed West Ham’s first shot at goal in the 70th minute, a screamer that arrowed into the top corner from 30 yards.

Heung-Min Son fought fire with fire with his own thunderbolt from 30 yards to level it up on 82 minutes.

Otherwise, the story was about our constant pressure and whether or not we could find a way through West Ham's packed defensive line, often with 10 men behind the ball and defenders who got in the way of everything we threw at them – and when a defender didn’t block, Adrian played his part in goal. It ended 31-3 on the shot count, but only one goal and one point to show for it.

“With 45 years in football you see a lot of things, these games sometimes happen and we need to accept it,” said Mauricio.

“We had 31 attempts, created a lot of chances, tried to score goals in different ways and sometimes this can happen if you are not clinical in front of goal.

“It’s one thing if you don’t create chances, another if you do create chances and have the possibilities and don’t score, then it’s your mistake and your fault. Football has different truths and you can play in different ways and we need to be focused, critical and next time, more clinical.

“It was a game we deserved to win and the effort from the team was amazing. That is why we're so disappointed and frustrated but the character we showed to come back into the game was so important.”
