Spurs 1-1 Fiorentina - Mauricio's verdict

Thu 19 February 2015, 23:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino had mixed feelings after our 1-1 draw against Fiorentina in the Europa League Round of 32, first leg at the Lane on Thursday night.

The Head Coach was pleased with the performance against the in-form Italian side but left disappointed that we couldn’t take a lead into the second leg in Florence on Thursday week, February 26.

Roberto Soldado volleyed home to hand us the lead on six minutes and with Andros Townsend rampaging down the right, we created a number of chances.

Christian Eriksen fired over, Roberto hit an overhead kick straight at Ciprian Tatarusanu, Paulinho tested the Fiorentina goalkeeper and Andros’ goalbound shot was deflected just wide - all inside the opening half-hour.

Jose Basanta scrambled home an equaliser against the run of play on 36 minutes but we came close again just before half-time as Roberto’s header was saved and Nacer Chadli hit the rebound against the crossbar.

Fiorentina tightened up in the second half and clear-cut chances were at a premium - Paulinho once again denied by Tatarusanu.

“I thought we deserved more,” said Mauricio. “In the first half we created a lot of chances. It’s a bit of a shame and I’m disappointed with result after 45 minutes because we dominated the game.

“In the second half we continued working hard. I’m happy with the performance but disappointed with the result because I thought we deserved more.

“This is football. I thought we were better than Fiorentina but this is a good thing and we now need to go to Florence and try to win the game.

“I’m sure it will be another open match. We need to believe in our possibility of going through to the next round and prepare for next Thursday but now we need to focus on West Ham on Sunday.”

We take on the Hammers in the Premier League with a noon kick-off at the Lane on Sunday.
