Spurs 1-0 Watford - Mauricio's verdict

06 February 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino felt the players produced one of their best displays of the season in Saturday's win against Watford at the Lane.

The statistics certainly reflect how we dominated the game from start to finish as Kieran Trippier’s first Spurs goal landed three big points in the Premier League.

We had 26 efforts at goal to Watford’s three - including 9-0 efforts on target - 66% possession and 15 corners to the visitors’ one.

Yet only one goal separated the teams as Trippier provided a clinical finish to Dele Alli’s cross in the 64th minute to lift us into second place.

“The stats are unbelievable - it was one of the best games we’ve played,” said Mauricio.

What are your thoughts on the performance?
“We deserved the result, we created a lot of chances and deserved to score more but you know, 1-0 is good, three points and we’re second in the table, so it’s a fantastic performance from the players.

“We need to recognise that our supporters were brilliant. The patience and the energy from our supporters was fantastic and I want to say thank-you because they were brilliant again.”

How important is it that a full-back – this time Kieran Trippier – can come up with such a vital goal?
Mauricio: “It’s very important and I’m very happy for him, very pleased. He arrived in the summer and has worked hard to get his opportunity. We have a strong squad and we can pick different players and the team plays with the same philosophy and in the same way. This is the key to this type of performance.”

How pleased have you been with the performance of all four full-backs?
Mauricio: “It’s important they all feel they are an important part of the team and the squad and share the responsibility to play. If we want success, it’s important everyone feels part of it.”

And once again, the team showed great maturity to see the game out at 1-0…
Mauricio: “Yes, maturity, but we also need to say one more time that we’re also the youngest squad in the Premier League. It’s fantastic. We feel proud of them, the way they play and the character they show and we need to feel proud of our players because they were fantastic.”
