Spurs 1-0 Palace - players' view

Sun 21 August 2016, 11:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Christian Eriksen, Michel Vorm, Harry Kane and match-winner Victor Wanyama all gave us their thoughts after Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane.

Victor popped up with the decisive goal seven minutes from time on what was his home debut.

Christian, meanwhile, made his 100th Premier League appearance.

On 100 Premier League games
“I got a text about it yesterday and that was the first time I knew. I hadn’t really looked at it but it’s very special. It’s gone really, really quick. Even yesterday I was sitting there thinking it’s my fourth season now so it’s been a good ride, it still is and I enjoy every moment.”

On the responsibility that comes with Premier League longevity
“The more experience you have, the more you know how things are supposed to go. When you feel more confident and you know everything around you it becomes easier to play and help the team at the same time. Some players have more experience than I have but everyone wants to help each other on and off the pitch so it’s a good group.”

On Palace game
“There were a few points today where we could have done better and could have finished the game earlier. We had the chances in the first half to finish it off and get some more confidence but it feels nice to win, especially when it’s a late goal. It’s especially nice for Victor on his first game here and for Vincent as well. The two home debutants did really well. It’s good to win at the start of the season – we need to get some points together and get how we play going. It’s always the points that matter and luckily we got them today because of Victor’s goal so it was very good.”

On clean sheet
“It’s great. I’m happy that we scored also because if you keep a clean sheet but you draw it’s a different feeling. We didn’t give a lot away and we played very well. I think we have to score a few more but at the end it’s about the three points and we got those plus a clean sheet, so happy days.”

On the challenge of winning the game
“With all these fast players up front and at set pieces, Crystal Palace are very dangerous. It wasn’t an easy game even though we created enough chances and you always have to make sure you’re aware because they can be dangerous out of nothing on the counter-attack. I think we showed good concentration from the first to the last minute and that’s something we need to do every week.”

On fitting straight into the team
“Yes, I’m happy. Obviously I played a lot of games in pre-season so I felt ready and I felt fit. I was ready for today and I think we showed as a team that we are ready for what’s coming in the next few months.”

On playing in the same team as Vincent Janssen
“I thought we played very well together today, we created a lot of chances and on another day we could have both had a couple of goals so it’s an exciting partnership. I’m sure you’ll see more of it this season and we’re looking forward to it.”

On Palace result
“It feels great to win today. Last season we didn’t win for the first four games so it’s important that we’ve started winning earlier this season. We don’t want to fall too far behind the teams at the top so we’re delighted with the victory.”

On wearing the captain’s armband
“It’s always an honour to captain the side and to win makes it that little bit more special as well. Of course, Hugo is the main captain, I’m sure he’ll be fighting to get back as soon as possible but it’s an honour to do it and I’m happy to do it whenever Hugo isn’t fit.”

On perseverance against Palace
“We had a lot of chances, created a lot but didn’t get a goal. We had to dig deep and work harder and harder. We were patient and at the end, we got out goal. It was important to get back to winning ways.”

On his goal
“It was amazing, I couldn’t ask for more. It was just a matter of time. It was a great set-piece and Harry did great as well – it was a team goal and the fans were great too.”
