Spurs 0-5 Liverpool - Andre's verdict

15 December 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andre Villas-Boas felt Paulinho's sending off made a difficult task impossible as Liverpool put us to the sword at the Lane on Sunday.

The Brazilian midfielder was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Luis Suarez in the 64th minute.

That ended any lingering hopes of a comeback and the Reds – in fine form on the day – took full advantage with three further goals to inflict a 5-0 defeat.

In truth, the damage was done in the first half as goals from Premier League top goalscorer Suarez and Jordan Henderson put the visitors in the driving seat.

To add to our problems, Sandro departed on 29 minutes with an injury.

Lewis Holtby replaced Sandro and looked to drive us forward, firing our best chance just wide in the first half. Zeki Fryers was introduced for Kyle Naughton at half-time for his Premier League debut.

Roberto Soldado fired over as we began to click into gear at the start of the second half but Paulinho’s dismissal left us open and the Reds capitalised through Suarez again, Jon Flanagan and Raheem Sterling.

“Liverpool played really well and we cannot take the merit away from their performance,” stated Andre. “They were on top, we couldn’t get our play together they deserved to go 2-0 up at half-time.

“Our response was extremely good at the start of the second half but the reality is that the sending off really affected us.

“We had some good moments in the second half. The spirit was there and we were gaining control, we were playing better.

“We’d just made an attacking substitution by removing Dembele and we ended up with 10 men with Nacer Chadli and Lewis Holtby in the middle. It was difficult for us.

“We want to do better. We have to bounce back. We did it against City and we have to do it again after this heavy defeat. We’re not far from our objectives, but it takes a bit out of everyone, for sure.”
