Spurs 0-3 West Ham - Andre's verdict

Sun 06 October 2013, 22:02|Tottenham Hotspur

Andre Villas-Boas pinpointed West Ham's second goal as the decisive moment in Sunday's Premier League loss at the Lane.

Our unbeaten home record this term fell to the Hammers after three goals in 13 minutes in the second half.

We had chances to grab the lead just after the break as Jussi Jaaskelainen saved one-on-one from Jermain Defoe and then tipped the striker’s snapshot over.

The Hammers then took the lead from a corner on 66 minutes as Winston Reid buried the rebound from his own header.

As Andre looked to reshuffle, the visitors countered, Ricardo Vaz Te broke through and although Hugo Lloris saved the one-on-one, the ball cannoned back off Vaz Te and home.

“That was probably the key to the game,” reflected Andre. “We looked to go to two strikers to have a go, but that’s when 2-0 happened and made it very difficult for us to come back into the game.”

Ravel Morrison’s solo effort consigned us to only our second home loss in our last 16 Premier League matches and our first by more than a one-goal margin in 32 matches.

Andre continued: “In the first half, both teams played well, wanting to win and it was an intense half.

“There was a great rhythm to the game and either team could have taken the lead. It was completely open.

“In the second half we came out strongly with the right frame of mind and deserved to take the lead.

“But they had the corner that led to the goal and that put us in a very difficult position, especially as we tried to make the changes to try and score, we ended up conceding again.

“You can always be vulnerable against teams that defend well, control the spaces well and make it difficult. They look to hit you on the counter and West Ham did that well. They deserve credit for what they did.

“We were unlucky not to score at the start of the second half and then ended up chasing the game from a difficult position.”
