Darren Bent underlined his desire to join us by admitting: "I always wanted to come to Tottenham."

The England international completed his move across London from Charlton on Friday and couldn’t wait to pull on a Spurs shirt.

Darren scored 15 goals last season as Charlton battled in vain to avoid relegation. That figure, including 13 league goals, came despite a two-month spell on the sidelines and took his tally to 31 in the top flight (37 in all competitions) in two seasons at the Valley.

What clearly impressed in negotiations was that the 23-year-old wanted to join us, a point he was only too happy to confirm. “In my heart of hearts I always wanted to come to Tottenham,” he said.

“Everyone wants to play at the top level and Tottenham have showed in the last couple of years that they are one of the best teams in Europe, so it’s the perfect place for me to continue my development.

“There are some fantastic players at the club. I’m looking to be part of a team and hopefully help us break into the top four.

“You only develop by training and playing with better players and I’m relishing that challenge. It’s something I can’t wait for.”

The icing on the cake for Darren was the chance to step back into the European arena – something he tasted very early in his career.

“I actually made my debut for Ipswich in the UEFA Cup,” said Darren, referring to his substitute appearance in a second round, second leg tie against Swedish side Helsingborgs aged just 17 back in 2001, a 3-1 win for Town.

“I’ve grown up a lot since then, I’m a better player and Europe will be a massive challenge.

“I’m looking forward to playing against different opposition from Europe, you can only judge yourself against the top clubs and playing in the UEFA Cup is an example of that."
