Martin Jol praised the resilience of the lads after they pegged back Wigan three times in Sunday’s Premiership draw at the JJB Stadium.Emile Heskey opened the scoring for the home side with less than a minute on the clock only for Dimitar Berbatov to level three minutes later – the pattern was set.
Leighton Baines volleyed home spectacularly to make it 2-1 on the half-hour but five minutes later we were level again, Robbie Keane converting from the penalty spot after Jermaine Jenas was brought down by keeper John Filan.
Wigan – in a scrap for survival - went ahead for the third time when Kevin Kilbane powered home a header on the hour but Keane was there again eight minutes later, capitalising on a defensive mix-up from Paul Robinson’s clearance to lob Filan from distance.
“We could have made it a bit easier on ourselves but it must have been a terrific game for the neutrals,” reflected Martin at the JJB.
“We would have liked to have gone ahead but we conceded three goals, the first goal after just a minute and that wasn’t ideal because they might have been fresher than us after we played on Thursday.
“We showed great resilience and we’ve done that all season.
“We wanted to win the game, we didn’t want to settle for a point but afterwards, if you’ve concede two goals from set-pieces, you have to.”
