Special Olympics Football Clinic, Lisbon
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation (THF), the Official Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia Grassroots Football Provider, hosted a Football Clinic in Lisbon, last week as part of the Special Olympics European 7-a-Side Football Tournament.
More than 100 young athletes with intellectual disability from local schools and 21 national teams representing European countries took part in the two-day clinic conducted by THF coaches George Timotheon, Gareth Jones and James Hemmings. The coaches taught athletes drills and games where basic motor skills, awareness and maximum ball contact were introduced and enhanced.
The Portugal clinic is the first of a series of training and coaching clinics to be provided by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation at Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia football competitions and followed on from our support at the launch of the Special Olympics United Football Roadshow in conjunction with Special Olympics Great Britain, where Harry Redknapp, Robbie Keane and Ossie Ardiles attended and took part in a demonstration event at Spurs Lodge on April 30th.
According to Grant Cornwell, Chief Operating Officer of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation: "Special Olympics dispels myths, changes negative attitudes and creates new opportunities to embrace and celebrate people with intellectual disability.
"The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is honoured to be involved with Special Olympics both in Great Britain and across Europe/Eurasia. We look forward to developing this partnership further so that the joy and benefits of football can be enjoyed by everyone."
The Special Olympics European Seven-a-Side Football Tournament took place across four venues in Lisbon Portugal from May 7-10 with more than 200 young athletes with intellectual disability representing 21 countries in Europe and Eurasia.
