Special day for Gareth
Saturday will be a special day for Gareth Bale - as he tells our official matchday programme.
The flying winger is on the brink of two more milestones – 200 games in all competitions for us and becoming the first Spur to hit 20 goals in the Premier League since Jurgen Klinsmann in 1994-95.
Gareth currently stands on 199 appearances and 19 goals in 29 matches in the Premier League.
All that, and we take on his former club Southampton at the Lane!
“I was there from the age of nine to 17, so it’s a club close to my heart and I have a lot of friends still there,” explained Gareth, who only played against his former club for the first time earlier this season, scoring in our 3-1 win in the away fixture.
“I’d wanted to go back to St Mary’s for ages. I’d watch all the cup draws hoping we’d get them so it was nice to finally get the chance to go back and to get on the scoresheet.
“My celebration was muted though and it would be again should I be fortunate enough to score.
“It was a big season for Southampton. I was hoping they would stay up and it looks like they are going to do that now. They have done very well this season and I hope that continues, apart from this game, of course!
“It’s great to get games under your belt and for my 200th appearance to hopefully come against Southampton, that makes it all the more special.”
As we all know, Gareth has become only the second player in history to win all three major individual honours after being named PFA Player and Young Player and FWA Footballer of the Year this week.
But despite all the individual honours and milestones, Gareth has one target.
“The most important thing for us is to just concentrate on ourselves, no matter who the opposition is. We need to win to keep ourselves in contention for that top four spot.”
Our programme is available from the usual outlets on Saturday - 100 pages for £3.50.
