Dean Richards

The transfer tug-of-war that Tottenham and Southampton waged over Dean Richards has been one of the key aspects of both club's seasons. The Saints have been deprived of their most consistent defender while Spurs have gained a quality centre-back, albeit for the rather heftry price of £8 million.

Whether Richards is actually worth that much money is something that will be decided over the next few seasons, not in a matter of weeks. But the Boxing Day clash between Tottenham and his former club should offer a great chance to view just how well Richards has settled in north London.

The man who has probably benefited most from Richards' sale has been Norwegian international and former centre-back partner Claus Lundekvam. The former Brann Bergen defender looked like becoming a peripheral figure at St Mary's before Richards' sale, but is now a stalwart of Gordon Strachan's new-look Saints side.

Lundekvam has shown great aerial strength in 2001-02 by making a century of headed clearances, which is the highest total at his club although 20 fewer than Richards has managed.

Richards is equally astute with his head at the other end of the field. While the Norwegian has not scored a single goal for Southampton since joining them in 1996, the Spurs defender scored for his new club against Manchester United and could pose a real threat to his former team-mates on Wednesday.

Online bookmakers surreySPORTS are offering odds of 13/2 on the Spurs man heaping more misery on the Saints with a goal at anytime at his former stamping ground, while 14/1 on Lundekvam finally opening his account in English football might appeal to those who believe in Christmas elves, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and the like.

With all the furore surrounding the Richards deal, this match should be a great spectacle, which given the mixed results between these clubs down the years, really could go either way.
