Sound Offs: Gus reaction

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Almost complete approval seems to be the order of the day with regards to the signing of Gus Poyet. Here is the first batch of your responses…

Nick Ellicott, Ilford: I am well chuffed we have Poyet, after all he was the one single player in Chelsea's team that tore spurs apart in their 3-0 victory at the Lane this season more then any other. The influence he and Sheri can have on the youngsters would be fantastic. Well done Hoddle, you're already making us proud to be a spurs fan!

Richard Baird, Cheshire: Very excited about this. You need a strong spine to a team with experience, passion and the ability to score, and Gus has that in abundance. Can't wait to count the number of goals he scores from Ferdinand heading the ball down for Gus to volley into the top corner.

Stuart Jeffs, Exmouth: Gus Poyet is just the sort of player we need - an experienced pro who did not break the bank with a few years football left in him. Our up and coming youngsters can learn by playing alongside him and by the time he is past Premiership football they will have matured. Keep it up Glenn, don't get tempted by the "quick fix". A few more wise buys and in a couple of years we'll be at the top where we should be.

Paul Stafford, Redditch: The arrival of Gus is a huge step forward for the club. He is a talented international footballer with strength, power, vision and goal scoring ability. It has been a long time since we have had a quality midfielder and the experience he will bring to the club will certainly benefit the younger players. It also sends a strong message to other players looking for transfers, that message is that THFC are going forward again and can now win things. Great signing by Glenn.

James Halls, South Ockenden: I think the signing of Gus, is an important one because we have never really found a player who can come close to playing the role in which Gazza played. Gus is proven goalscorer of exceptional quality, all we need now are some better defenders and a defensive midfielder. The left hand side needs immediate attention in defence and midfield, but hopefully Ziege will soon arrive at the Lane.

Daniel Holladay, Witham: Gus will be a quality signing for us. He hasn't had the best time at Chelsea due to the rotation policy, but still has an excellent record. Their loss is our gain. Glenn is right when he says age doesn't matter, we have some excellent young stars and players such as Poyet and Sheringham will help bring these through. All we really need now is two-three players in their prime (24-28) and we will be knocking on the door to European football. It’s great to see the ambition growing at the club in line with that of the supporters.

Brad Bloom: The answer is simple, whilst I am sure none of us fans doubt the ability of Poyet or the fact that Glenn Hoddle is trying to establish some experience to add to our extremely talented youth, one question still remains. Is Glenn going to be able to pull of a major signing? Someone who other big clubs are interested in. To send out the warning bells that yes Campbell may have gone, but the club, the current players and "incoming" players feel it will only be a season until Glenn has put us back where we belong, above the gooners and back in EUROPE!

Richard O’Donoghue, Ilford: Gustavo Poyet is one of the few foreigners who have a superb attitude. If he gets left out of the team he doesn't cry about it he just doubles his efforts. He may be 33 but we have got to get the ball rolling before we attempt to sign the cream of Europe. He is an improvement, and no disrespect to Teddy Sheringham, but Poyet is a far better signing. When I heard we were interested in Shevchenko I nearly cried with laughter. Does any one think Serie A’s leading marksman would come to mid-table, out of Europe Tottenham - we've got more chance of getting Pele out of retirement. But Poyet, he can help us get there and Gerard Houllier wanted him and he's certainly got an eye for golden oldies - remember McCallister.

Ilan Weinstein, Edgware: Until now Gus Poyet has been my favourite player outside Tottenham. Now he is my favourite player inside Tottenham! He is definitely the midfielder that we were missing. He is the attacking midfielder that manages to score plenty of goals and also will be able to provide Rebrov the service that he wasn't getting last season.

Corrinne Dowsett, Waltham Cross: I think he will probably be an asset to start with, but where will his loyalty lie. While you are buying ageing players Glenn, please give David Ginola another chance, he had our wonderful club deep in his heart and I truly believe he still has. He is so unhappy where he is, please repair the damage done by George Graham.

Max Stringer: Gus Poyet is an outstanding capture by the club, he will add a lot more style and strength to a weak midfield. He is a genuine midfield goal scorer with his feet or head. Could even be captain material. His age should not be a problem and it would be great to see him and Simon Davies in the centre of our midfield. Well done to the club and to Glenn.

Darren Hart, Leeds: It's great that the club can attract and buy players of the quality of Poyet. The one worry that I have is that the new players might limit the number of games for the youngsters. I truly believe the youngsters are the only way in which we can compete with the elite clubs. Gus has a part to play in bringing on the youngsters and helping the club challenge for honours in the immediate future. I have all the faith in the world that King Glenn will bring success back to the Lane.

James Smith, Barrow-in-Furness: I think Gus is a good signing. It shows that Glenn wants an attacking team at Spurs and this should be considered a sign of things to come.

Pete Morris, Enfield: Fantastic!! The arrival of Gus Poyet will prove to be one hell of a buy. Rebrov, Sheringham, Poyet, Iversen, Carr, Davies, King, Bunjevecic, The makings of one class act. Keep it up Glenn, but then he always could (the ball that is).

Jamie Smith, Isle of Wight: I reckon he’s quality even though he is 33. I don’t want too many OAPs in the team though. Mabye Hoddle could sneak a game with the average age of the team going up.

Stig T: I love to have proven winners in the team. Just like Freund only needed a few months to secure the club's first trophy in 8 years - a fit Poyet will prove to be a vital player in the 2000/1 campaign.
