Sound Offs: European route?
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Martin Hill: We must beat Chelsea and to do that Glenn must get Davies in from the start. Certain players did not perform in the final, maybe it is time for the youngsters. I have got great faith in Glenn he will get it right. Come on you Spurs
Rhian Fudge: I think that we have to go for both if we can. Spurs deserved the cup. We beat Chelsea a month ago, we can do it again. I felt the fans weren't supporting the team enough.
Steve Prestidge: We love the 'History Repating Itself' situation, so here we go again. 1982, lost in the League Cup Final, won the Cup Final, and who did we beat in the FA Quarter Final, Yep Chelsea? FA Cup's the route into Europe, maybe beating Arsenal's reserve team at Cardiff.
David Thrussell: I do not believe that we are consistent enough to get a place in Europe. Blackburn are an average team yet they totally outran us in the second half in Cardiff, and we did not pressurise them until the final 5 minutes. It looks like we will have spent yet another season being hailed as underachievers.
Daniel Gordon: The simple answer is that both should be equally important. We don't have European games, just league and FA cup. There is no reason why one should have priority over the other. Spurs need to find their consistancy at a high level. Winning the FA Cup means nothing if we havn't moved on on all fronts this season, because we would be dumped straight out of Europe and no better off in the leauge next season. We need to bring in more quality young players so that they can learn off of our current group of 'golden oldies' enough to take over in a year, or two years time, when they will retire or be to old for top class football. We lost the leauge cup because of inconsistancy. Teddy Sheringham and Gus Poyet had a really bad game, passes went stray from them for a lot of the match and they lacked inspiration. Ferdinand got in all the right positions but still failed to finish, and although Friedel had a good game most of the efforts from Ferdinand were saved easily because they were straight at him or without power. Anderton failed to produce the form he has shown this season, giving passes away and not looking at his best. The failure at Cardiff lays at all the players feet, especially at the striking end of the field not just Ledley King and his to many touches in front of his own net. As for the supposed penalty any true football fan will look at the slow motion replay and see that Teddy dived, he was hardly touched yet did a superman impression. If you look for a penalty like that, not inviting a tackle and going down but running over some ones leg, then you don't deserve one. I am a true Spurs fan, I love the team and think they are doing a pretty good job most of the time this season, but we have to be honest because excuses won't let this team develop and move forward, not facing our faults and failings will only hold this Great club back.
Kaare Madsen: We have to leave the disappointment behind us. We still have a chance to get in to the top six. But of course the best way to Europe is through the FA Cup. It would be great with some silverware! Should we end up losing in the cup - and not end in the top six - we can still qualify for the UEFA Cup via the Toto-cup.
David Noonan: I think we have a good chance against Chelsea in the cup, however a European place via the league is surely out of reach. I think it's time that Hod took stock, having been at the Worthy cup final myself. The end of the season is time to offload some of the older players. Being honest, Les wasn't up to the standard and his three glorious chances cost us the match. Sherwood also needs to be replaced with someone in there who can lead us to the next level. Teddy and Gus Poyet both had stinkers, however their overall quality should see them through one more season at the Lane. Phillips is the natural choice up front, as he's a superb all rounder. I still have 110% faith in Glenn to put us back up there, as Man Utd and Rome weren't built in a day.
Richard Birkinshaw: I thought that the Worthington Cup was our best way of qualifying for Europe but ever the optimist now I believe that the best route to Europe is through the FA Cup if we can just reproduce the form that saw us thrash Chelsea 5-1 in the next round. I would like to see us qualify through the league but as Glenn Hoddle pointed out consistency will be our problem but, with Hoddle at the helm, I can only see a bright future for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
Tim Stone: Realistically, sixth place in the premiership is beyond Tottenham Hotspur this season, we are too many points off the pace and there are some very good sides occupying the top six at the moment. Give Glenn another year or two (and a few quid) to build a quality squad and we WILL be a formidable force in the premiership again. This year our only european hope left is going to be the FA Cup. Winning the FA Cup is a very tall order with
Chelsea, Newcastle and Arsenal all still left in the competition. We are very capable of winning the cup but the boys need to have real desire to put things right after not only letting their fans down but badly letting themselves down after the dismal performance they put out in Cardiff. The semi final against Chelsea showed that this team are capable of great things but by the same token the games against Ipswich, Derby, Southampton and of course Blackburn have shown we are also capable of throwing games away that we should win. I have total faith in Glenn Hoddle and I feel that great things are just around the corner for us and hope we can produce our best form to win the FA Cup this year. If we can learn from this seasons low points and strengthen our squad in the summer then next season and the seasons after should be very healthy ones for our great club. The Worthington Cup is over and in the past now, a mistake is only a mistake if we do not learn from it.
