Sonny 'an example' - Mauricio

13 October 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino paid tribute to Heung-Min Son's 'patience and hard work' after the South Korean star was named the Premier League's EA SPORTS Player of the Month for September.

He's the first Asian player to win the Premier League's monthly award - an award stretching back to 1994, coincidentally, first won by our German legend Jurgen Klinsmann.

Sonny enjoyed a spectacular September with four goals in two away victories at Stoke and Middlesbrough and away from the Premier League, scored a crucial winner in the Champions League at CSKA Moscow.

It's quite a turn around from what the player admits was a tough first season in the Premier League - he's already matched his goals tally of four in 28 appearances last term.

"In football, if you work hard, believe and have patience, you will always be paid back," said Mauricio. "In this case with Sonny, that's what has happened.

"I'm pleased for him and it’s a great example for all, present and future.

"He’s more mature than when he arrived a year ago - a young player and a player from another country will always need time to adapt and settle. We’re very happy with him. He’s scored a lot of goals and helped the team achieve points."
