• Forms part of Club’s commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles in its local community
• Project supported by Haringey Council’s Obesity Alliance
The Club has launched a new community health scheme, ‘Shape Up With Spurs’, to help fight the rising obesity problem in its home borough of Haringey.
Currently, over half of all adults and one in three 10 and 11 year olds living in Haringey are classed as obese or overweight.
Heung-Min Son and Tom Carroll attended the launch of the project, which is being delivered by the Club’s charitable Foundation.
‘Shape Up With Spurs’ forms part of the Club’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles within its local community and will provide Haringey residents with access to free nutrition and exercise classes at Tottenham Community Sports Centre.
The 10-week programme will see Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Health and Wellbeing team work closely with participants, encouraging them to take part in regular exercise and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Sessions are delivered twice a week and open to people of all ages and abilities. One-to-one support is available to all participants to help them set individual goals and maintain physical activity levels. There is also a GP referral system in place for those with underlying health conditions.
During the launch, Tom and Son gave participants some helpful advice on simple exercises to do at home and spoke about the benefits of doing regular physical activity and eating a balanced diet, as well as taking part in a smoothie-making challenge.
Tom, an England U21 international midfielder, said: “As professional players, we are lucky to learn at a young age the importance of exercising and eating the right type of foods, so it is great to be able to pass this knowledge onto local people hoping to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“Shape Up With Spurs is a great project and I’d encourage anyone living in the local area to come along to one of the sessions – they’re completely free and there’s a lot of expert advice and guidance on offer.”
Grant Cornwell MBE, CEO of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, said: “Shape Up With Spurs uses the unique appeal of Tottenham Hotspur and the example of our players to encourage healthier lifestyles for people of all ages within our community.
“Obesity is a serious issue and we are working with other members of the Haringey Obesity Alliance to address these problems through initiatives like this.”
Cllr Peter Morton, Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing and Chair of the Haringey Obesity Alliance said: “It’s fantastic to see Tottenham Hotspur - a key member of the Haringey Obesity Alliance - launching this important community health scheme. This programme will help more Haringey residents to get the benefits that an active, healthy lifestyle brings, including reducing and preventing obesity locally.
“From its creation just seven months ago, the Haringey Obesity Alliance now boasts 65 members and, as programmes like Shape Up With Spurs show, is making good on its pledge to make Haringey a healthier place.”
Tottenham Hotspur Foundation was the first organisation to join the Haringey Obesity Alliance in 2015. The Alliance, led by Haringey Council, sees organisations and individuals from a range of different backgrounds work together to make Haringey a healthier place where fewer people are obese.
