'Sometimes, the result isn't enough' - Hugo, Sonny, Dele and Toby on our win at Boro
25 September 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Opinion direct from the dressing room at the Riverside Stadium as Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Lloris and Heung-Min Son give their verdicts on our performance and 2-1 victory against Middlesbrough.
It was a controlled display and convincing win, however, the view afterwards was that we should have put the game to bed in an outstanding performance in the first half.
Instead, Sonny's well-taken double after seven and 25 minutes saw us take control, but chances to extend that lead came and went and allowed the home side to have their spell in the second half, where they responded through Ben Gibson on 65 minutes and found that extra energy to put us under more pressure.
It wasn't enough to get them back into the game though as we stood firm at the back to make it six unbeaten at the start of this Premier League campaign. Indeed, Boro ended with just two efforts on target.

On why the result 'isn't enough'
"We know where we want to be at the end of the season and we work hard every day for that. It’s the way we enjoy football - to win is to do the job. It’s true that today we had a good performance but the result is not enough, we should have scored one or two more goals, especially in the first half. In the Premier League we know it’s difficult to have full control at 2-0 up and today was the perfect example. We conceded the goal from the free-kick and at 2-1 you don’t know, do you attack? Do you defend? Their crowd was pushing but defensively we were very strong because we didn’t concede a lot of chances, so that’s positive."
On seeing the game out
"We take a lot of risks in the way we play, we create a lot of chances and at the end, I think we showed more maturity and saw the game out and as we prepare for the Champions League again, it’s a perfect result."

On how it felt to score twice again
"It was unbelievable, scoring two away goals against Middlesbrough after scoring two at Stoke, twice in a row in away games. I’m very happy to score two goals and get the three points."
On the second half
"It wasn’t easy in the second half because they scored in the 20th minute (of the second half) and then we had to defend. The most important thing is the three points. It was a difficult game, we defended well after they scored and I’m thankful for my team-mates."

On his chance in the first half
"We were really comfortable from kick-off. We dominated the game, and I put a lot of the blame down to myself because I should have finished that chance at the end of the second half, it was an easy chance. We made it difficult for ourselves by not seeing the game out earlier but three points away from home is always a good result."
On the importance of winning without Harry Kane
"There is no hiding how good Harry is, he’s a great striker and a great goalscorer. Vincent did really well, held the ball up, he’s so strong and a pleasure to play with, good to play off and a threat as well, credit to him."
On Sonny's second goal
"I was right behind it. I don’t know why he said he was so shocked about it, you see him do it all the time in training and he’s always working on his finishing. He’s a fantastic player and deserves all the credit he should be getting. He’s on fire and hopefully he’ll keep it going."

How he felt the game went defensively as Boro pushed on
"We have to be more clinical and if you want to be a top team you need to finish those chances and finish the game. Of course, they got a goal back from a set-piece but I still had the feeling defensively everything was good, I never had a feeling they were going to score again, they had two attempts on target, so the organisation was good. Our build-up play was good but we have to score more so we can make the second half easier!"
