'Sol's our colossus'
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Glenn Hoddle has described Sol Campbell as our ‘colossus’ and revealed he will soon be sitting down with him and the new board in a bid to keep him at the Lane.
Skipper Sol is already able to talk to clubs on the continent under the terms of the Bosman ruling and can leave on a free at the end of the season.
But Glenn insists he would like nothing more than the England star to taste success in his new era at Spurs.
“Sol’s getting better and better and he’s yet to hit his peak,” said Glenn. “We’ll have to make sure that we try our very best to keep him here.
“We’ll be sitting down with the chairman (Daniel Levy) and David Buchler (executive vice-chairman) and discussing that around a table. I’m involved in that.
“We’ve had good talks, Sol and myself and those talks will remain private.
“I’ve worked with him before with England so there was no having to get used to his character or anything. I know Sol, he knows me and we are very relaxed in each other’s company.
“He’s a terrific player. In fact he’s more that — he’s a colossus for us and we want to keep him here dearly.
“I think there is a bright future for the club. Sol’s been here a long time, he’s a Tottenham man and I would be delighted for him as much as anyone for us to have success and for him to be part of that.”
Glenn was in no doubt when asked if he believed Sol was the best centre-half in the country. “I think so,” he said. “I saw the best defenders in the world at the World Cup and Sol was getting near to that.
“I think he’s learned a lot in the last two years and he hasn’t reached his peak yet.
“You don’t do that until you are 28, 29, 30, they are the best years. I always like to say another set of curtains open then and the game becomes a lot easier.”
