Sol on Adams' values
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Sol Campbell has described Tony Adams as a ‘great servant’ to English football.
Adams has announced his retirement from the international scene to concentrate on his club football at Arsenal.
Now 34, Adams said he had taken the decision to listen to his body. “Something had to give and it has to be the internationals,” he declared. “I want to give the benefit of the time I have left in the game to Arsenal.”
Big Sol, his opposing skipper in the fierce north London rivalry, insisted: “He’s made his decision but he’s been a great servant to this country football wise and deserves as much credit as possible.
“Obviously it wasn’t always that way but now, in hindsight, people look back and say what a great competitor and footballer he was, and still is.”
Sol has seen Adams at close quarters with England and admits he helped in his early days at that level.
“I was a young lad coming into the squad and at the time you learn bits and bobs off certain players, like you always are,” said Sol. “It was nice to have a man who had as much experience as him. He was there at the top.
“As time has gone on he’s got into different things mentally and it’s helped his game.
“He’s been at the top for a number of years, over 10 years now. He’s had his ups and downs, got through various problems and stayed at the top.
“What else can you say about the man? He’s an unbelievable guy, a great servant to England and I hope he continues playing football for a long, long time.”
