So close to just reward
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
David Pleat reflected that the team so nearly reaped the benefit of not playing on the back foot against Arsenal.
Reward for the philosophy was quick in coming with Darren Anderton's opening inside five minutes but further, clearer, chances came and went without adding to the lead.
"We didn't play on the back foot and tried to go for the game," explained David. "We had a problem coming to Arsenal as many teams have found. If you try to stifle the game you're not really going to create at all - we tried to get the balance right.
"Our defenders did really well though, they didn't fall for the dummies or dribbling skills and we had terrific blocking when Arsenal did get near the six yard box. The goalkeeper made two wonderful saves in the first half.
"We were so positive in the second half when Arsenal could have really come for us. We stayed in ascendency for the first 20 minutes before the goal changed it a little bit.
"I don't think it was offside, but I'm told there was a few debatable line decisions. Henry wasn't offside when he went through and Keane, twice, also wasn't off. It was very close.
"We could have had three goals and I though their back four were rocking a bit and a bit ill at ease with us. Our front players worked very hard, but we needed them to get a goal."
David reasoned that the positive spirit in the camp should serve the team well in the future and that the solidity of recent weeks has been retained with more inventiveness added at the other end.
"The spirit in the team is good and the respect of each other within the team is good. It has been said that we haven't been too creative recently and just been solid. I felt we were solid again, but a bit more creative.
"Of course we know if we had done better in the holding of the ball and taking of chances in forward positions we would have probably won the game. We had the better chances."
