Sinton treble helps Legends win in Cropredy

23 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andy Sinton’s third hat-trick of the season helped the Spurs Legends team record an emphatic 11-3 victory over Banbury COYS at Cropredy FC on Sunday (October 20).

The lads’ tendency to concede in the first couple of minutes haunted them once again in Oxfordshire, but after Darren Caskey brought the Legends back on level terms 10 minutes before the break, the hosts crumbled and the ex-White Hart Lane favourites hit double figures.

Less than two minutes were on the watch when Troy Bryan fired the hosts in front, and it looked set to be a frustrating afternoon for Spurs as they failed to convert a number of chances to equalise.

One of a number of clever balls over the top from midfielder Garry Brooke found Sinton, who forced a corner, and from Mark Falco’s flag kick, Stuart Nethercott headed wide.

Caskey fired wide, Ramon Vega struck the post, Sinton forced a save from the goalkeeper and Falco was off target from close range as the Legends hammered on the door in pursuit of a leveller.

Sinton produced another stop from the keeper, before Caskey finally netted the equaliser in the 35th minute, firing low into the bottom corner after controlling Vega’s cross in the area.

Goalkeeper Gareth Howells made a save low to his left to prevent Banbury COYS from re-taking the lead, before Brooke played Stephen Clemence in behind the defence to make it 2-1 to Spurs on 40 minutes.

Caskey saw a diving header fly marginally wide of the post following a cross from Clemence, before a good counter-attacking move involving Vega and Clemence ended when Sinton finished coolly past the keeper a minute before the break.

Sinton bagged his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot after a foul on substitute Micky Southam five minutes into the second half, before Vega chipped the goalkeeper from a tight angle to put the Legends 5-1 up.

The effective supply line from Brooke in midfield allowed Southam to make it 6-1 shortly afterwards, before Sam Oyibitan pulled one back for the hosts when he converted a cross from the left at the far post.

Keeper Howells made another good save, before Caskey unselfishly set Sinton up to complete his hat-trick mid-way through the second period.

Vega bagged number eight for Spurs when he again chipped the keeper, with his effort finding its way in via the underside of the bar, before Steve Potter replied for Banbury COYS in style, firing high into the net.

Southam slotted home in the 83rd minute to make it 9-3, before Clemence headed home substitute Trevor Wilkinson’s cross to take the Legends into double figures.

Howells had to stay alert to prevent the hosts from grabbing a fourth goal, while Wilkinson was denied by the Banbury COYS goalkeeper at the other end.

The scoring was completed when a Banbury COYS defender inadvertently slid the ball into his own net a minute from time, while Brooke forced a late save from the hosts’ goalkeeper, who had to tip the ball over the bar as the Legends finished with a flourish.
