Clive Allen saw similarities between the first team's win against Portsmouth and how the reserves finally overcame Derby 1-0 on Wednesday night. Both had the lion’s share of possession against stubborn opponents and on both occasions substitutes played a key role in the eventual success.
Where Darren Bent and Jamie O’Hara came off the bench to score the goals against Pompey, Academy striker Jonathan Obika did the same with the only goal of the game in the second half.
It was no less than Clive’s team deserved as they stretched their recent run to three matches unbeaten to move up the Barclays Reserve League South table.
“We put in a performance of patience, control and Derby very rarely threatened,” reflected development coach Clive at Brisbane Road. “It was a 1-0 win but I thought we were comfortable.
“We had to stick to the game plan and eventually we got the reward we deserved.”
Obika entered the fray at half-time and capped an impressive second half up front by first winning and then converting a penalty after 73 minutes.
“Jon did well,” added Clive. “He was aggressive, his hold up play was good, he made a couple of interceptions and he looked dangerous. He deserved to step up and take the penalty and showed a lot of confidence for one so young.”
