Siggy on song
Gylfi Sigurdsson is hitting top form at the right time.
The midfielder took his fine form at club level with us here at Spurs onto the international stage on Friday night.
Gylfi steered Iceland to a key win in World Cup qualifying with both goals as his team came from 1-0 down to beat Slovenia 2-1 in Ljubliana.
The result sees Iceland in joint-second place in Group E on an identical record with Albania on nine points, with leaders Switzerland two points ahead having drawn in Cyprus.
With matches against Switzerland and Albania still to come, Iceland have a real chance of making it into the top two of the group.
In the European qualifying zone, all nine group winners progress to the World Cup Finals in Brazil with the best eight runners-up chasing another four places through the play-offs.
Gylfi spoke to us from Slovenia and insisted: “It’s a great result, we really needed that win and we now have a chance of making second place in the group.
“We’ve got to play Switzerland away, Slovenia again, Albania and Cyprus at home is vital as well, we lost to them away. The important thing is that it’s in our hands.”
In recent weeks, Gylfi scored at West Ham, set-up Gareth Bale’s opener against Arsenal and then scored again against Inter Milan.
“The last six weeks have been good for me on a personal level, I’ve played more regularly, that helps and it was fantastic to get the two goals for Iceland but it was vitally important for the team to get the three points,” he added.
“We’ve had very important games of late in the Premier League and Europa League and more coming up with Swansea, Everton, City and Chelsea, plus Basel in the Europa League.
“Hopefully we’ll push on again in the Premier League and get through to the semi-finals of the Europa League. That’s what we’re all aiming for.”
