Sheer determination for Shayon

31 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Shayon Harrison says his new contract has given him an added boost as he strives to continue his progress on and off the pitch.

The young forward, 18, has worked hard in training this season and has translated his efforts onto the pitch for our Under-21s, netting six goals in 12 appearances in all competitions so far. He also earned the chance to travel with our first team squad for November’s Europa League trip to Qarabag – all contributing to what he believes has been an encouraging season for him so far.

But he’s not about to rest on his laurels after putting pen to paper on a new deal, insisting the graft for him is only just beginning.

“I’m buzzing about the contract and when I got told I was really over the moon that the hard work I’m putting in is starting to pay off,” said Shayon, who plundered 15 goals in 18 games for our Under-18s last term.

“In the last few weeks I feel I’ve been doing quite well, scoring goals and training with the first team a lot so I’m really happy about that and I want to keep making progress now.

“It’s definitely a big jump from Under-18s to Under-21s football, it’s more of a men’s game at the higher level, but I’m delighted with the chance to test myself against bigger centre-halves, more difficult opponents and hopefully I can just keep getting better and better each time.

“I really enjoy playing for this club, we have a fantastic Head Coach and I really want to kick on now.”

As the Hornsey-born front man alluded to, Mauricio Pochettino has afforded him and some of his young colleagues the chance to further hone their craft by working with our established first team stars at close quarters in recent months.

Shayon believes that can only aid his development as he continues to chase his dream of one day playing for us at senior level.

“It’s fantastic, working alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen and the other top stars,” he said. “They’re some of the best players in the Premier League so learning from them and watching how they train each day is fantastic for me as I grow and hopefully I can be like them one day.

“I’d love to play for Spurs’ first team and it’s good to know that the Head Coach believes in the young players and he really gives all of us a chance. As a young man you want to see that.

“The more experience I can gain, the better. I’m still young so I know that will come as time goes on but hopefully I can try to get as much experience as I can early on and that will help me to progress later in my career.”
