Sergei's dismay

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Sergei Rebrov has spoken of his disbelief over newspaper reports suggesting he is unsettled at the Lane.

Reports during the week carried quotes attributed to Sergei from an interview given to a Moscow newspaper. Our Ukrainian dynamo insists he said nothing of the sort and is perfectly happy at Spurs and is looking forward to the new campaign.

Sergei was reported to have said: "I'm not seriously putting down roots in London. My present team, which I hope to see qualify for the Champions League in the new season, is not top of my dreams,"

“I can’t believe it,” Sergei told us. “I spoke to this newspaper and we talked just about the Ukraine national team, about the some Russian teams and the league — nothing about the Spurs.

“I don’t know where they took this from, what interview? I can’t believe it. I’ve already given an interview to a Ukraine newspaper saying I don’t understand where this came from.”

The reports also said Sergei was disturbed by driving through an ‘Arab area’ on his way to training. Sergei lives in Chigwell and does not have to travel too far to reach Spurs Lodge.

“I read this newspaper about this Arab area! I can’t believe because this is a very nice area.

“I want to leave Tottenham! Why? I not really played for Tottenham yet. Of course I’ve just finished one season but I have not showed what I can do.

“Now with a new coach, new players — now will be much better.

“People will believe the reports and say ‘what’s the problem?’, but the English paper did not ask me if I said it or not, they had already written it in the newspaper — that’s the problem. They should ask me if I said it or not.”

Sergei then moved to assure supporters that he has no intention of seeking pastures new, and upset that some might have thought that on reading the reports.

“Fans might believe it and think I want to leave, I will not leave Tottenham — why would I?”
