Sergei: 'That was for fans'
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Sergei Rebrov broke into a satisfied smile and admitted: “That goal was for the fans.”
The Ukrainian star opened the scoring against Arsenal in Monday night’s derby with a poacher’s diving header to end a two-month drought in front of goal. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out to be a famous winner as Patrick Vieira headed home an equaliser in the last minute.
Nevertheless, Rebrov’s goal capped a successful return from the thigh problem that had ruled him out for the last couple of weeks and put a smile back on his face after recent stories — categorically denied, for what it’s worth - that the club was ready to offload him.
Speaking in his broken but rapidly-improving English at Spurs Lodge, Rebrov reflected: “Of course that was a very important goal but for the fans, not so much for me. They have been great and I know that game means so much to them.
“It doesn’t matter for me to score — all that is important is that the team is winning.”
So what were his thoughts on his first derby? “The atmosphere was very different. It was different before the game with many interviews and there was more interest.
“The game itself was not too different from the rest, perhaps a little more intense. But the atmosphere in the ground was different. You could see it meant a lot to the fans.
“It was good to score after my injury and to come back but all that matters is that the team wins.”
