Senior service boosts Calderwood

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

New reserve team coach Colin Calderwood pointed to the addition to the ranks of several first-teamers as a major boost when it came to securing a first win of pre-season at Woking by a 4-0 scoreline.

Colin was delighted with the injection of experience and added quality given by goalscorers Oyvind Leonhardsen and Mauricio Taricco, along with Simon Davies. It was in midfield that the coach felt the benefit was there to be seen.

"It was a huge improvement on our two previous games. We benefited from having Leonhardsen, Davies and Etherington playing in that little midfield triangle which produced a bit more quality on the ball and better balls in to the front. Because of that we began to look a bit more progressive.

Match report: Woking 0-4 Spurs

"We’ve got to be happy that, with the size of the pitch, we looked physically fit and strong and, as I said before, it’s such an improvement on the last performance especially — it’s a step in the right direction."

The last performance was a 6-0 defeat at Arsenal, which followed a 3-1 reverse at Barnet. Colin says that it was not the staff that re-built the confidence of the players to produce a fine team display at the Surrey outfit.

"I don’t think so. We came up against a very good team that day (against Arsenal) and we weren’t as well-drilled or prepared as we would be for a League game. It was a very tough pre-season game and I think it was a lesson learned by everyone.

"They all took it on the chin and had a good look at themselves and come back with a good attitude and have gone about their work in the last few days better than before. Sometimes out of these negative things a lot of positives come out and I think that is what’s happened."

The tone for the night was set by stunning early strikes from Leonhardsen and Taricco — goals that relaxed nerves in the dugout.

"We definitely had a bit more quality in there, and when you’ve got people who can score goals like that, it certainly makes the game from the sidelines a lot easier.

"The tempo was good. We looked controlled at the back, better starting positions all over the pitch and, with the big pitch, it was a very good physical exercise for everyone."
