Goals from Cameron Carter-Vickers and Ryan Loft gave our Academy a 2-0 win over Toluca at the IMG Cup in Florida on Thursday.
Following on from a 6-1 victory over Baltimore Celtic in our opening match, we made it back-to-back wins with two second half goals against the Mexican side.
“It was a really pleasing performance,” said Under-18s Coach Kieran McKenna. “We saw everything we look for in a tournament outing – dominating the game, dominating the ball and finding a way to win the game.
“In the first half we pinned them in, kept the ball very well after a high-tempo start and were very patient in terms of waiting for our opening.
“We got the first goal in the second half, which had been coming, and then after that I thought we were always in control. We saw out the game in a professional manner and eventually picked them off at the end with Ryan’s goal.”
Connor Ogilvie went close with a header from Cy Goddard’s corner in the first period – and it was from another aerial attack that we took the lead eight minutes after half-time. Goddard swung in a free-kick and Carter-Vickers was there to head into the net.
Ismail Azzaoui was denied by the Toluca goalkeeper on two occasions before we wrapped up the win four minutes into added time when Anthony Georgiou broke down the right, cut inside and swung the ball in for Loft to finish on the volley.
Our final group match takes place on Saturday evening against the USA Under-17 national team, kick-off 10.30pm UK time, 5.30pm local.
Spurs: Voss, Walker-Peters, Ogilvie, Amos, Walkes, Carter-Vickers, Sonupe (Georgiou 71), Stylianides (Owens 64), Harrison, Goddard (Loft 57), Azzaoui.
