Scouting report - Ossie Ardiles on Dybala and Higuain

03 August 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

A new feature for next season, our 'Scouting Report' will see legends, pundits and experts in the media give us the lowdown on a key player or players we're about to face. First up, legendary former midfielder, manager and World Cup winner with Argentina Ossie Ardiles on Juve's Argentine pair Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala...

Ossie Ardiles

ossie250x250 - World Cup winner with Argentina, 1978
- Joined Spurs alongside Ricky Villa, 1978
- FA Cup winner, UEFA Cup winner
- 311 appearances for us between 1978-88
- Capped 52 times by Argentina
- Managed the team in 1994-95
- Now Club Ambassador

Juventus are a formidable team. Of course, they were in the Champions League final and lost against Real Madrid, but reaching the final against the very best in Europe on top of what they are doing in Serie A underlines how good they are.

They have a lot of wonderful players and there are two players I’d like to mention, Higuain and Dybala.

Back in Argentina, my team, the team that I started with, Cordoba Instituto, have three big names. One, of course, is myself! The second is Mario Kempes, who helped us win the World Cup in 1978 and the third is Dybala.

Dybala 'a creator who scores goals as well'

Dybala is a player of great interest right now. He’s a very skilful player, about my size, very clever. He doesn’t play as a proper centre forward like Higuain, but a little behind the forward line. Spurs need to watch him very closely because he creates goals, scores goals, he does everything, playing in a ‘10’ position, the same position Maradona played, just in behind. It’s the number one position every footballer wants to play in Argentina. I wasn’t clever enough to play that position, I left that to Ricky!

Higuain, you just have to look as his goalscoring record at Real Madrid, Napoli and now Juventus, wherever he has played he’s been a huge success. Both he and Dybala are members of the Argentina national team and that’s why we are one of the best teams in the world. Just think in terms of attack, there is no comparison, Higuain, Dybala, Messi, you can see how strong we are at the moment.

Higuain 'his record speaks for itself'

Higuain is a ‘proper’ centre forward, the last man and if anything drops in the area, he will be there to poach goals. In that respect, he’s quite similar to Harry Kane. Harry can come and join in the play and score goals. Higuain can come back, join in, create for others as well. But, like Harry, he’s judged on how many goals he scores and to score so many goals for Napoli and Juventus in Italy, in a league so famous for defending, they are the masters, if you are a forward and score lots of goals there you are clearly very special. His record speaks for itself.

This will be a real test for Spurs and I’m sure it will be a wonderful game.
