Saints v Spurs - Mauricio's preview
19 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino expects us to face a stern test against his former club this afternoon (Saturday, December 18).
We take on Southampton at St Mary’s, where Mauricio was in charge between January, 2013, and May, 2014, prior to taking the reins here.
The Saints have endured a difficult few weeks under Ronald Koeman of late and are without a win in their last five games in all competitions.
But Mauricio has warned that the talent at his successor’s disposal means the home side are more than capable of bouncing back and has stressed that total concentration from our players is required if we’re to return to winning ways ourselves following last weekend’s defeat to Newcastle United.
“It’s not important to look at their run, they have one of the best squads in the Premier League, a great manager and at St Mary’s, the supporters push them a lot,” said Head Coach Mauricio ahead of today’s 3pm kick-off.
“We know that and it’s important to be focused and to concentrate because they have very good players.”
Honours ended even when Mauricio led us out at St Mary’s for the first time at the end of last season and the Argentine confirmed this fixture remains a particularly meaningful one for him.
“It’s a special game,” said Mauricio, who was in charge at La Liga side Espanyol between 2009 and 2012. “I love the people at Southampton, I have a lot of friends there and for me, it was a big step to come from Spain and the way they treated me, my family and my staff was fantastic. For me, it will always be a special club.”
