Saints impress Jan

Jan Vertonghen has been impressed with Southampton – but that’s not stopping him targeting a win at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The in-form defender is looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat against Chelsea, halting our sequence of four straight wins in the Premier League.

Southampton have four points from their eight matches so far on their first season back in the top flight, but performances in high-profile early tests against City and United deserved more than two late defeats - the Saints led in both.

“They have a strong team, I’ve seen them a few times and they play ‘proper’ football,” said Jan. “They really want to play and believe in their own philosophy.

“They score a lot of goals, but concede a lot as well.

“We’ve performed well in our away games, so hopefully it will be the same again on Sunday. We’re confident and we hope we can win to stay at the top of the league.”

Meanwhile, Jan was disappointed not to beat NK Maribor in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Back in a central defensive role, Jan was inches away from winning our third match in Group J when his 25-yarder whistled just wide in the final minute as it ended 1-1 in Slovenia.

“Maribor is a tough opponent and they are always strong in the Europa League, but we feel disappointed because we hoped to win here,” he added.

“We have two home games to come and the group is still open, so we’re all confident we can make it into the next round.”
