Saints 0-2 Spurs - Mauricio's verdict

19 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino felt there was real maturity in the way the players managed the game once we went 2-0 up at Southampton.

The team recovered from a tricky start against the Saints to score twice in three minutes at the end of the first half – goals that turned the game in our favour.

Harry Kane marked his 100th appearance for us with a fantastic opening goal quickly followed by Dele Alli converting from Kyle Walker’s cross for 2-0 at the interval.

We stayed in control from there and Hugo Lloris was only seriously tested again in the final minute when he saved superbly from James Ward-Prowse.

“I’m pleased about the result and the performance from 20 minutes, we played very well in the last 70 minutes and deserved the win,” said Mauricio.

“We deserved the win because we managed the game well from 20 minutes. It’s true a big save from Hugo (from Mane at 0-0) was fantastic but in the second half we showed real maturity.”

Mauricio on Harry Kane
“It’s always pleasing when a striker scores and we’re delighted for him. It was a fantastic goal and then a fantastic second half from the team. Harry is a winner, we trust in him and have confidence in him.”

Mauricio on the squad
“The squad is the youngest in the Premier League and it’s fantastic in the way we played. I’m happy because this was a difficult game, Southampton have one of the best squads in the Premier League.”

Mauricio on the team’s mentality
“This win showed our mentality. We’re working hard, we try to win games and we’re strong. We’re young but we have a strong mentality.”

Mauricio on Mousa
“It was a fantastic performance.”
