Ryan's pride

25 March 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Ryan Mason has revealed that he heard the news of his England call-up in Mauricio Pochettino’s office!

The midfielder joined team-mates Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Andros Townsend and Kyle Walker for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on Friday and next Tuesday’s friendly against Italy in Turin.

Ryan has grabbed his chance with both hands this season.

It all started with a stunning strike off the bench in the Capital One Cup against Forest at the Lane in September and three days later, he made his Premier League debut for us in the North London derby at the Emirates.

He’s been a regular since, racking up 22 starts in the Premier League - only Hugo Lloris, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen have more.

Now he’s got his England chance - and he fully intends to grasp that with both hands as well.

“It all came as a bit of a surprise,” Ryan told us on Monday evening before joining up with the squad today. “I was sitting in the gaffer’s office talking about the weekend and the next thing I knew the news had come in. Crazy!

“There was a real sense of pride and honour, it’s hard to describe really.

“I was with the gaffer and all the coaching staff and they all congratulated me. It was great to get the news in front of them because without them I wouldn’t be in this position.

“It’s a big achievement to be in there, really exciting.

“I can’t wait to get involved and the fact we’ve five players there is great, it’s ideal to go into it knowing that. I can’t wait to get out on the training pitch.”
