Ryan and Micky share 'Grassroots to Glory' tales
22 January 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Ryan Mason and former midfielder Micky Hazard spent an evening chatting to supporters about the interesting back-story between them at White Hart Lane on Thursday night (January 21).
A member of our successful side of the early 1980s, Micky coached Ryan as a youngster and helped him hone his craft before he came to Spurs – and has continued to offer him help and advice ever since.
As part of the unique ‘Grassroots to Glory’ event, the midfield duo spoke to a large gathering of fans in the hospitality lounges at the Lane, with Micky, now 55, revealing his pride at seeing Ryan establish himself as a senior player at the club he represented with distinction over two spells during his storied career.
“It’s surreal and emotional for me because I’ve known Ryan since the age of six and to be here at White Hart Lane with him is an absolute honour,” said the Sunderland native, who joined us in the late 1970s and helped us win back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982, plus the UEFA Cup in 1984.
“It’s a privilege to have played a small part in his growth and development and, equally importantly, I’m proud that he’s grown into an absolute gentleman as well as a fantastic footballer.”
Academy graduate Ryan, now 24, added: “It’s great to share an evening with Micky, my family and our supporters. I’ve learned a lot from Micky over the years and it’s easy for young players to forget the people who actually helped get them where they are, but I definitely haven’t forgotten.
“It’s good that I can share these experiences with Micky. To have learned from somebody like him, with all that he achieved in his own career, has been fantastic.”
Look out for an extended feature with Ryan and Micky on Spurs TV soon.
