Rob Burch revelled in the atmosphere against Orlando Pirates on Saturday - a game he described as the biggest of his career to date.
The 19-year-old was plunged into first team action in South Africa with Kasey Keller still on international duty in America and both Neil Sullivan and Lars Hirschfeld suffering slight injuries.
To his great credit, 'Burchy' wasn't overawed at all by a partisan 30,000-plus crowd at Durban's ABSA Stadium and produced a confident display of relatively routine saves, safe handling and no shortage of bravely on occasions when the boots were flying.
Following a summer with the England squad in Toulon, Rob has now featured in first team friendlies against Oxford and Norwich - not forgetting playing against us for Stevenage in our opener back on July 16 - and he looks set to start again when we tackle Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday night.
"This was an important step for me," he reflected. "I've had a few games in pre-season and it's been good.
"I didn't know I was coming out to South Africa until late, wasn't really expecting to play, then Lars picked up a little injury and it was nice to get a game again.
"I had a lot of important games last season but this is the biggest for me yet. I enjoyed it, just a shame we lost.
"It was the biggest crowd I've ever played in front of and I could barely hear myself shout. It was a brilliant experience for me. It was an unbelievable atmosphere and great to be part of it."
