Robert's England dream
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
A sojourn in the Spanish sunshine of La Manga two weeks ago left young goalkeeper Robert Burch dreaming of a trip to the United Arab Emirates for the World Youth Championship in late March.
Robert was selected for an England under-20 training camp at the popular sporting resort and he must have made a positive impression for he has been named in the squad for the fixture against Germany at Reading tonight.
The international recognition is welcome reward for the Academy third year, who was one of the star turns of last season's FA Youth Cup run. This season he has stepped up to train with the senior goalkeepers but, like all young keepers, has had to be patient and wait for playing opportunities to arise.
"It's been good and the season has been not bad for me," reflected Rob at Spurs Lodge. "I haven't played as much as I'd have liked to, but I've been on the bench for the reserves, played a couple of friendlies, played against West Ham reserves and did enough to get called up for the training week.
"La Manga was nice, the weather was nice and it was a good experience to see the other goalkeepers and see what the competition is. It was good.
"The other two keepers there were a bit younger, but obviously very good because they were called up. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses - but they were good keepers."
Rob reports that the England under-20 goalkeeping coach was pleased with what he saw in La Manga - and the coach in question was one Tony Parks.
"They said they were pleased with me and I didn't make any mistakes so I am happy with that," added Rob, who now hopes he impressed enough to book a place in the World Championship squad.
"That was the main thing really, so they could look at more people with that in mind. There are a few players who will not be able to make it because of first team duty.
"It would be nice - very good."
