ROBBIE'S READY

Robbie Keane says he feels fresh and is raring to go for the new season.

Our striker and vice-captain opened his account for 2007-08 with a penalty in the 3-1 friendly win at Stevenage Borough on Saturday.

A back injury kept the Irish skipper out of the Republic’s summer tour of the USA and internationals against Ecuador and Bolivia and therefore he was able to enjoy a full six weeks off before returning for pre-season training last week.

“It was the first time in 10 or 11 years that I’ve had that break, I normally get about three weeks because of international duty but I was injured at the end of the season, so it was nice to get the full six weeks off,” reflected Robbie after slotting home from the penalty spot at Broadhall Way.

“Having said that, when you have that amount of time off you are always looking forward to getting back and the first week was great.

“I feel refreshed and it’s always nice to get back. We did a lot of hard work in the first week, I’ve played 90 minutes and now it’s a continuation of that work, looking forward to the games, training and the first game of the season.”

Robbie was pleased to open our friendly campaign with a win over the FA Trophy winners in what was a very dominant second half display after the first half ended 1-1. “It was a good performance and an ideal work out for the team,” he added.

“We were a bit sloppy in the first half but we stepped it up in the second half, showed our fitness levels and came through it well. The most important thing is the fitness side of it but it’s good to get back into a winning mentality as well.”
