Robbie Keane on... taking penalties

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

After his excellent last-minute penalty against Arsenal on Sunday - a goal which gave us a well-deserved and morale lifting draw - who better to ask about taking spot kicks than our Republic of Ireland striker.

Robbie was cool, calm and collected as he brought the house down at the Lane with his last-gasp strike, and when we caught up with him at Spurs Lodge, he offered one vital piece of advice for anyone taking a penalty.

"The most important thing is to always know where you’re going to hit the ball, stick to it and never change your mind," says Robbie.

"When people miss, it’s usually because they've changed their mind right at the last second. Everyone says this, but it’s very true. Stick to where you want to hit it and more often than not you’ll get it in, unless the keeper pulls off a worldy save which there’s nothing you can do about.

"Against Arsenal, I knew where I wanted to hit it, I caught it sweet and luckily it went into the top corner. Of course, there was pressure, there’s pressure whenever you take a penalty, whether it’s in the last minute against Arsenal or any time. But luckily enough I’ve been in those situations before so it was just a case of holding my nerve.

"I enjoy taking penalties and when you score them it’s great. There’s no big secret to taking them but you do need a bit of luck as well. I wasn’t penalty taker at Leeds, Ian Harte never missed so I couldn’t really take it off him!

"Last year here our taker was Teddy of course, but I am at the moment now and if I continue to score there’s no reason why I won’t keep the job."
