Result: Spurs 0-1 Charlton

English Barclays Premiership

A fine first half display was wiped out as Carlton Cole's header condemned us to defeat against Charlton.

Substitute Cole met Paolo Di Canio's corner in the 68th minute to clinch the points and leave us in the Premiership's bottom three.

The result was harsh on the lads after their first half endeavours and, not surprisingly taking current form into account, confidence and belief drained following Cole's goal.

The plus points saw John Jackson impress in his second Premiership appearance and home debut down the left flank and Stephen Kelly's full debut, stepping in for Stephen Carr at right-back.

The only thing missing from the first half display was a goal although the visitors could point to missing the best chance of the half.

Dean Kiely, as usual, proved too tough a barrier to overcome in the Charlton goal, making two fine saves and when he was beaten, Scott Parker was there to clear off the line.

Jackson kicked-off his positive contribution with a volley that flew just wide before Kiely's first stop, out quickly to block with his legs after Robbie Keane played a one-two with Fredi Kanoute.

The best chance then fell to Charlton after 22 minutes. Di Canio spotted Jonatan Johansson's run, he had time to compose himself but Kasey Keller stood strong to palm away - he was then stranded as the ball fell back at the striker's feet but he somehow lobbed wide.

Kiely had to be on his toes to tip over Kanoute's towering header after 25 minutes as we finished the half on top.

The French striker and Poyet both spectacularly volleyed wide and Poyet finally beat Kiely after 32 minutes but his header from Jackson's corner was cleared off the line by Parker.

Cole came on for Johansson at half-time and Charlton came out with more purpose in the second half.

Yet we still had the early efforts as Mauricio Taricco and Rohan Ricketts fired wide from half-cleared free-kicks and Keane had claims for a penalty waved away when Mark Fish was all over him as Keane went for a high ball.

But Cole's header - high into the corner from 12 yards after 68 minutes - knocked the stuffing out of us and Charlton finished the stronger.

Keller had to tip over Parker's curler, Cole missed from a yard and Keller kept out Parker's drive with his left foot.

A couple of late surges with all four strikers on - Postiga, Zamora, Keane and Kanoute - failed to dent Charlton's defensive line and left us with a present-less Christmas.
