Result: Hastings 1-1 Spurs XI

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Despite taking a first half lead, Colin Calderwood's young Spurs X1 were held to a draw by Hastings United on Saturday afternoon.

At a sunbaked and sprawling Pilotfield ground, Hastings were always going to provide a stern test for what was, with a few exceptions, pretty much last season's Youth Cup side.

The Dr Martens Eastern Division champions certainly approached the game with physical relish, but Spurs rode the storm in the first half and dictated the play to a large extent.

Dean Marney was pivotal to all our best work in the first period and carved out an after only two minutes from which both Steven Ferguson and George Snee were unlucky not to score from.

The livewire midfielder almost made himself a shooting chance when he glided into the box, dinked and then attempted to loft the ball over his marker for a shooting opportunity.

Goalkeeper Shwan Jalal was captain for the day his return to his former club and he was only troubled in the opening stages by a vicious free-kick that bounced in front of him. His first meaningful action was on 34 minutes when he reacted superbly to block a rising shot from about ten yards out.

Before this Spurs took the lead when Ferguson neatly played the ball to trialist Frank Parisi on the edge of the Hastings area. Parisi, with very little time and space, shaped and fired the ball into the top left hand corner.

The second period did not match the first for fluency and entertainment as Spurs lost their way slightly in the heat and ten minutes into the half the ball was swung in from the left and Nick Hegley leapt and steered the ball past Jalal to level.

In the final action of the game Spurs very nearly clinched the win, David Galbraith released a precision cross from the left which found John Sutton in the centre. Sutton spun and unleashed a shot that only the fingertips of home goalkeeper Dave King prevented from being a winner.

Team: Jalal, S Kelly, Henry, O'Donoghue, Hughes, Marney, Snee (Sutton 51), Parisi (Thomas 64), Ferguson (Barnard 45), Ricketts (Galbraith 64), Jackson. Sub not used: G Kelly.
