Reserves back on track
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Spurs secured a second win of the FA Premier Reserve League season with an impressive 2-0 win over a Southampton side containing several familiar faces.
The south coast outfit fielded stars such as Matt Le Tissier, Mark Draper, Francis Benali and James Beattie to provide a stern test for the reserves, who were seeking to banish memories of their last League outing - a 5-0 reverse at Charlton.
The evening got off to the perfect start. With five minutes on the clock, Matthew Etherington darted towards the Southampton penalty area before freeing Yannick Kamanan on the left. The young striker cut the ball across the area via a deflection and Ciaran Toner (pictured) fired a lofted volley into the top right hand corner of goal, giving goalkeeper Neil Moss no chance.
Toner, recently recovered from injury problems, was causing the visitors no end of difficulties with his direct running and no little skill factor. He was denied another goal five minutes later by a superb reaction save from Moss down low to his right.
Southampton eventually found their feet and managed to nullify the home side for the remainder of the opening period and the game lost some of its momentum.
Spurs upped the tempo considerably in the second half, and Etherington and Simon Davies began to influence the pattern of the game. Davies, who formed an impressive midfield partnership with captain Stephen Clemence, dictated the play with some neat, incisive passing, while Etherington's darting runs were causing no end of problems down the left.
It was a run by Etherington which led to the second goal. The speedy winger set off and outfoxed his marker before delivering a precise cross to which Willem Korsten applied the finishing touch to at the far post.
Etherington should have got in on the scoring act himself, but spurned three clear-cut chances to put a gloss on the scoreline that the performance deserved.
