Reserve result: Spurs 1-2 Fulham
FA Premier Reserve League South
OJ Mabizela completed 90 minutes in his 'competitive debut' for the reserves, but could not prevent the second string falling to their first defeat of the season against Fulham at Stevenage.
The South African international looked assured once he found his feet in a high quality and entertaining encounter that could have gone either way.
The visitors found the net after just four minutes when a sloppy back pass from Chris Perry led to a corner. Adam Green took the corner from the left, planting a superb ball onto the head of striker Facundo Sava to powerfully nod past Rob Burch.
The Spurs response was not long in coming, just three minutes later Jamie Slabber's neat pass inside the area found Johnnie Jackson, who executed a neat jink in an attempt to beat Green and the defender stuck out a leg to impede his forward thrust. He attempted to remain on his feet and play on but, as soon as this failed, referee Mr Graham pointed to the spot and Jackson duly obliged with a powerful left-footed penalty.
The frenetic tempo of the game dipped slightly following the goals and it led to some fairly evenly contested exchanges, with 1st year Academy boy Phil Ifil very much to the fore. The right wing-back dispatched two almost pin-point crosses on the run - one which Mark Hughes could not find the power to convert and the other narrowly missed by Slabber.
For Fulham, Sava shot just over from a decent scoring position and Darren Pratley shot just wide of Burch's left-hand post.
Spurs seized the initiative shortly before the break and Jackson's powerful goalbound shot, destined for the top corner, struck Liam Rosenior and deflected to safety, while Mark Hughes shot just over.
As in the first period, Fulham took the lead early in the second. A speculative shot was blocked well by Stephen Kelly, but the rebound bounced arkwardly and Andrejs Stolcers nipped in to head the ball past Burch and into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
The end to end theme continued and Marcel McKie effort was foiled by visiting keeper Flitney and a John Harley shot sailed just over.
The best chance to level came on 66 minutes when a smart through ball from Slabber found the run of Lee Barnard who reached the ball before Flitney, but the goalkeeper blocked bravely at the feet of the striker.
Flitney blocked a low cross ball from Ifil, with sub Michael Malcolm ready to punce, with three minutes left on the clock. Then a header from fellow sub Paul O'Donoghue flashed just wide from a Jackson corner.
