Clive Allen was pleased with the way his young reserve side responded to the challenge of falling a goal behind just before the break against Fulham at Stevenage on Monday evening.
Despite a bright first half display it was the visitors who stole the lead when Neale McDermott was found to the right of the area and smashed his shot in off the underside of the bar.
Clive did not have to wait long for his team to rise to his half-time challenge, Edson Silva Sousa latched on to a Marcel McKie cross to net past Dave Beasant in the first minute of the second period.
Good pressure and a number of chances followed, but the spoils were shared with Fulham for the second time this season - our first encounter on the opening day of the season finished goalless.
"I was pleased with the way we played, although disappointed we came in a goal down at half-time," reflected Clive. "A lot of heads were down and it wasn't because we played poorly.
"It was a highly competitive game, but we didn't perhaps play as well as we can. I think we paid the price for a little bit of sloppy defending right on the stroke of half-time.
"As I said to them at the break, it was a test for them as it was the first time for a good while that they had fallen behind and it asked question of them.
"It was a great response early in the second half and I was delighted with that, just disappointed that some of our good play and build up wasn't finished off with a goal. I think one would have won it.
"We had some good movement, there was some quality passing, but if there was one criticism it would be in the final third we didn't have that composure. There was a lot of enthusiasm, but a bit of nervousness, in one or two of the younger players and this was a good test for them.
"You take a lot from and gain good experience from a game like this."
