Clive Allen described himself as disappointed with the application of his team in the reserve defeat to Ipswich on Wednesday evening.
A 39th minute goal for the home side settled the encounter and it is proving to be a frustrating period for the Development Coach with his team now seeking a first win in five.
"Very much so, as I've said before when we've had performances like this, you do learn a lot about individuals and that was the case again here," said Clive after the game. "It was a game in which we started slowly and never got to grips with a young, enthusiastic Ipswich side.
"We had the advantage from an age and experience point of view, but it was a case of not being able to control the game. We were on the end of a defeat and the overall contribution of the team was very disappointing.
"The way we started set the pattern for it, as I said to the boys at half-time. It was better in the second half but nowhere near the standards I know they are capable of.
"They worked very hard to keep their shape and we weren't able to disrupt that. It is something I know we are capable of doing and we need a lot more effort in terms of running off the ball to create space to play into."
Ipswich started with seven players who are likely to be taking on our under-18 side in next Friday's FA Youth Cup semi-final, first leg - a fact that was not lost on Clive.
"The effort and endeavour of Ipswich was first class and we got a little insight into what our Youth team are going to face in the semi-final next week. They are going to have a very, very tough game and I will report back to Patsy Holland with a few pointers.
"I would certainly hope the youth team play better than the reserves have tonight."
