Report: West Ham 2-0 Spurs

English Barclays Premiership

Les Ferdinand didn't let the script writers down as we tumbled to defeat at Upton Park.

The striker left us in the transfer window in January but saved his first goal in claret and blue for this torrid encounter to pave the way for the home side's victory.

West Ham started brightly and Kasey Keller was called into action twice in the opening six minutes.

He was bravely out to meet Lee Bowyer 50-50 after Steve Carr's block on Jermain Defoe after three minutes and parried superbly to his left as Defoe latched onto Trevor Sinclair's header.

We responded with our best move of the half after 11 minutes as Darren Anderton, Teddy Sheringham and Simon Davies combined to release the charging Carr but the full-back's low drive was saved well by David James.

Bowyer and Glen Johnson picked up yellows for wild tackles but Bowyer was soon a fraction away from opening the scoring, drifting between defenders onto Defoe's pass before hitting a shot that Keller touched onto the post.

There was no shortage of incident as Joe Cole joined Bowyer and Johnson in the book for clattering Davies.

The opening goal arrived after 31 minutes and who else could it be? Defoe tricked away from two players on the halfway line, ran at the defence and slipped the ball to Ferdinand who drilled his shot through Keller and home.

Our best chance arrived just before the break as James misjudged Anderton's deep corner and Sheringham headed back at goal, just evading Matty Etherington at the far post.

Glenn Hoddle brought on Ben Thatcher for Goran Bunjevcevic at half-time and switched to a wing-back system for the second half.

But any plans to claw our way back into the game were hit hard when West Ham doubled their lead just two minutes into the half.

It was a terrible goal defensively as well as Dean Richards gave the ball away, Ledley King sliced his clearance into the air and Keller dropped the ball under Ferdinand's challenge. Michael Carrick seized his chance and half-volleyed into the empty net.

Keller soon made up for that error by somehow clawing Ian Pearce's header off the line and Ferdinand almost diverted Cole's shot towards goal as West Ham tried to capitalise on the euphoria around the round.

Play became a little scrappy after that as both sides made substitutions and it wasn't until the 72nd minute that the next chance arrived, Don Hutchinson's shot deflected inches wide.

Cole flashed a shot across Keller but just wide as the game entered the final 10 minutes and Davies fired over from Sheringham's knock down.
