Report: Spurs 1-1 Man City

English Barclays Premiership

A moment of magic from Jermain Defoe ended our run of defeats in a tense Easter Monday clash at the Lane.

Defoe completely outwitted City defender Sun Jihai before sliding home the equaliser at the start of the second half.

In an enthralling end to the game, Defoe appeared to have his shirt tugged in the box by Richard Dunne only for penalty appeals to be waved away and Robbie Keane had a goal ruled out for offside.

But City will point to a crucial moment just before the break when Kasey Keller somehow kept out Robbie Fowler from close range when a second goal seemed a formality.

In the end, a draw was probably a fair result.

David Pleat brought in Fredi Kanoute for Robbie Keane, Gus Poyet and Mauricio Taricco in three changes from the Good Friday defeat at Everton.

The recalled Poyet had a huge say in a bright start to the first half.

Showing all his enthusiasm, the Uruguayan midfielder flicked a header just wide, powered another header at James and skied an overhead kick attempt all in the first 20 minutes.

Kanoute then poked powerfully from 20 yards after Defoe's clever dummy only for James to claw the ball out at full stretch.

City then broke away and opened the scoring with 25 minutes on the clock. It was simplicity itself as McManaman rolled the ball into Anelka, he evaded Taricco and Doherty and although Keller did well to block the initial shot from 10 yards, Anelka was left with an empty net.

The visitors came into it more after that. Bosvelt should have done better with a clear sight of goal 18 yards out and then a wonderful save from Keller to deny Fowler from point-blank range from McManaman's cross.

We started well again in the second half. The woodwork denied a combination of Poyet and Gary Doherty before Defoe's leveller after 52 minutes. Simon Davies crossed deep, Poyet was in there again and Defoe picked the ball up at far post, faked to pass to Michael Brown, turned inside Jihai and beat James from the angle.

Taricco tried his luck from distance but City weren't dead as Dunne defended for his life and McManaman pulled the strings going forward - Anelka should have done better from a quick free-kick but glanced wide.

Then the storming finish. Keane's poke home from close range was chalked off for offside after 84 minutes, Defoe's penalty appeals were ignored after 87, Doherty did well to clear from Paolo Wanchope in injury time and the final effort, Redknapp firing just wide from 15 yards in the last seconds.
