Report: Rovers 1-0 Spurs

English Barclays Premiership

Another cruel deflection off Stephen Carr saw us leave Ewood Park without reward on Saturday.

The skipper threw himself of the way of Vratislav Gresko's speculative effort after 77 minutes only for the ball to take a wicked deflection, curl in the air and spin inside the far post.

That goal comes just three weeks after Freddie Ljungberg's shot looped in off Carr to win the North London derby in our last away game.

It was harsh on a defence that looked solid under a few spells of Blackburn pressure and although Rovers edged it, a goalless draw always looked likely.

The first half was pretty dire in terms of a spectacle with only one chance created and Anthony Gardner outstanding as we bossed it defensively.

Goalmouth action was sparse, let alone chances, with both sides enjoying spells of possession.

The best chance fell to Dwight Yorke after 15 minutes when Brett Emerton's inch-perfect cross found the striker clear, eight yards out, but his header lacked conviction.

A couple of shots from distance were all Rovers could muster from their best spell and we carved out our best chance after 33 minutes when Robbie Keane played the ball into Helder Postiga, he held off Andy Todd and laid it back to Stephane Dalmat who snatched his effort wide under pressure.

There was more action in the first 10 minutes of the second half than the first half - kicked-off by Graham Poll sending off Graeme Souness.

Postiga came within inches of opening his account when he managed to reach Konchesky's cross at full stretch but he couldn't keep the ball down from close range.

Gardner was needed to block Reid's effort and Emerton might have done better with a header at the far post from Gallagher's cross.

Yorke must still be scratching his head wondering how he failed to convert Emerton's low cross after 62 minutes, Postiga somehow managing to clear off the line and Keane blazed a good chance over after Carr's break from his own half.

The home side then took a firmer grip. Tugay's shot was held well by Keller, Gallagher's cross somehow missed everyone and Keller did well to tip Yorke's shot wide - injuring himself in the process.

We still looked solid defensively though and it took another cruel slice of misfortune to break us down.

Gresko picked the ball up 30 yards out and tried his luck, Carr threw himself in the way and it took a wicked deflection - the initial shot was going wide of the left post - curled through the air and spun inside the right post.

Rovers continued to press though with Reid firing at goal twice, Anderton lashed a free-kick over and despite a late surge in injury time, with Richards up front, we couldn't carve out another opening.
